Inspired by Percy Bryce Shelley’s poem, ‘Ozymandias’ and the art film ‘Tenshi no Tamago’ (‘Angel’s Egg) by Mamoru Oshii, this painting shows an angelic being rising from the sands that have become the tomb of fallen civilisations.
Despite many repeated cycles of the rise and fall of various hegemonic powers whose doings ultimately turn to dust, despite a loss of trust, and despite a desperate search for meaning in a desolate world, there is a dream in which society may one day rise as an evolved entity of hope, peace and love.

Uncanny Valley

The Uncanny Valley is a psychological and aesthetic relation between an object’s degree of resemblance to a human being and our emotional response to the object. It’s often used to describe the negative emotional response towards robots that seem "almost" human, or any humanoid being with distorted or exaggerated features, and a common device in dystopian art/film.
This piece entertains the notion that the Uncanny Valley is a physical place that triggers these same unsettling feelings as a result of the disparity between the expectation and reality of the appearance of the natural vegetation. The suggestion of buildings in the distance represents the potential final stage of metamorphosis of nature to un-nature, natural to unnatural.

Dragon and Dancer I & II

Agnes de Mille said, “To dance is to be out of yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful…This is power, it is glory on earth and it is yours for the taking.”
A dragon represents ultimate power and beauty - the embodiment of glorious fantasy. These paintings reveal a figure transported by dance. Then, having transcended the mundane, they become free to dance with the dragon who is a manifestation of the powerful celestial being that lies within us all.
Two versions were created of this painting - the black and white one is for the viewer to colour with their own imagination, and the colour one is for the viewer to delight in the idea that dragon and dancer are made of water and fire, light and dark, yin and yang in perfect harmony.

Hyacinth, Boreas and Zephyrus

In Greek mythology, Hyacinth was a Prince of Sparta famed for his beauty. He became the lover of the Sun god Apollo, who loved him so intensely that he abandoned his sanctuary at Delphi for him. However, as well as Apollo, Hyacinthus attracted many other admirers, and amongst them were Boreas, the god of the North Wind, and Zephyrus, the god of the West Wind.
Imagine - being loved by two spirits of the wind! Wrapped in powerful arms, borne aloft by two pairs of frenzied beating wings, entwined together on the air currents miles from the trammels of the earth, and soaring ever upwards to a rapture that can only be found in the heavens.
