Becoming

Exploring the journey of becoming...

BECOMING.jpg
Becoming 1

Acrylic on canvas (84x60cm)

2026

This piece evokes ideas of creation, memory, identity, and quiet resistance. The figure's face is presented as if wearing a monochrome mask - perhaps this is the mask forced onto them by society. However, the candles shield the figure and create a hushed, almost sacred atmosphere, enabling a safe space where rainbow hues can flow through the figure to the page, suggesting that writing is a beautiful act of becoming and revealing the self.

The use of a quill and the redundant ink pot sets the image in a bygone time, asking us to appreciate the history and historicity of queer writing, voices and people. Our voices, through writing, will carry across the ages.

I write in the in-between,

In the margins,

In the spaces you left blank.

I write the words they told me not to speak -

my name, my truth, my body, my love, my life.

I write because I refuse to disappear.

This is my story

in my own language.

Paradise ≠ Happiness THIS ONE.jpg
Paradise ≠ Happiness

Acrylic on canvas (40x30cm)

2024

It is a common conception that if we were to be in paradise, we would necessarily become happy. However, thinking that a beautiful environment will solve problems, comes from a perspective of externally-based fulfilment that can never be realised.

This piece depicts the idea that it is very possible to be in the depths of a personal hell, whilst physically being in a heaven.
An interesting corrective stance on this subject is voiced by Leighann Amanda who says, “The other day, someone accredited my happiness to the fact that I have been living in paradise. Paradise did not create my happiness, happiness created my paradise.”
